First of all, smoking weakens the lower esophageal sphincter or LES, which is the muscle responsible for closing the gab between your stomach and your throat, so by weakening this muscle, you are taking away your body's natural ability to prevent stomach contents from entering back up your throat, which is known as Acid Reflux.
Second, a strange correlation exists between people with Asthma, and those with Acid Relux Disease. Over 70% of Asthma sufferers who were told by their doctors to stop smoking and did, found that the symptoms of both conditions improved drastically. Those kinds of figures aren't just random chance.
Third, One of your body's main defenses again stomach acid is your saliva. when you smoke, you dry up your saliva, and hence again are preventing your body from naturally coping with this ailment. Saliva not only soothes your throat, it actually has the physical ability to neutralize stomach acid.
